What you'll study

The 25-credit Reading Specialist certificate builds on a 12-credit Dyslexia Certificate. Course topics emphasize Structured Literacy and the Science of Reading, with course work aligned to IDA accreditation and instruction in evidence-aligned practices.

• Dyslexia Certificate (4 courses, 12 credits): READ 721 Dyslexia and Structured Literacy; READ 722 Critical Components of Phonological Awareness; READ 723 Structures of Language & Linguistics I; READ 724 Data Integration and Instruction.
• Reading Specialist Certificate additions (to reach 25 credits): READ 725 Teachers as Writers; READ 726 Critical Analysis of Text; SE 711 Disciplinary and Digital Literacy; READ 729 Structures of Language & Linguistics II; READ 740 Evaluating Literacy Curriculum.
• Program highlights include faculty who serve as national LETRS trainers and Certified Orton‑Gillingham Fellows, connection to Carlow’s Campus Laboratory School for practicum work with students with dyslexia, and partnerships with regional schools.

Entry requirements

Applicants apply online and must submit official transcripts from all degree-granting institutions, a personal essay describing academic objectives, a current resume or CV, and two letters of recommendation addressing leadership potential and capacity for graduate-level work. Fall and Summer start terms are available. An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred; provisional admission is possible for applicants who do not meet all criteria. No prerequisites or teacher licensure are required.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles that focus on improving literacy outcomes, including Reading Specialist, Literacy Coach, Interventionist, Consultant, Specialized Dyslexia Tutor, or independent literacy contractor. The program emphasizes practitioner skills to support students and systems in closing literacy achievement gaps informed by the Science of Reading.
