A coursework-focused MS in Biology that combines advanced classes with a formal literature review rather than a research thesis. Suited to students seeking additional disciplinary training before entering research careers, doctoral study, or preparing for teaching and applied biology roles.

What you'll study

Coursework provides additional biological training and may be organized around one of three subject areas:

  • Ecology and Biodiversity: specialized study in ecology and organismal biology for students focused on ecological topics.
  • Microbial and Cellular Biology: coursework targeted at microbiology and cellular biology.
  • Zoology: emphasis on laboratory work including physiology and organic chemistry.

All students are required to enroll in Research Design and Analysis and Scientific Writing. Completion of a literature review on a current biology topic, supervised by a departmental faculty advisor, is a core program element.

Entry requirements

Applicants must submit an Emporia State University Graduate School application and complete the departmental Biology Application, including a personal background statement outlining goals and biological experience. Three recommenders (names and emails) are required so the Graduate School can request recommendations. Applicants should have an adequate undergraduate background in courses relevant to their chosen area; deficiencies may require remedial coursework. International applicants apply through the Office of International Education.

At application submission, provide an unofficial bachelor’s transcript, copy of government-issued ID, the departmental application, and three references or names/emails for recommenders. Official transcripts showing the bachelor’s degree (at least 60 credit hours) must be sent to the Graduate Office in sealed envelopes or via secure electronic service if used for admission or transfer credit.

Career prospects

The program prepares students for advanced positions in applied biology, doctoral study, and teaching at the high school (pending certification) or college levels. Typical roles aligned with concentrations include ecologist, conservationist, wildlife manager, game warden, zookeeper, animal husbandry specialist, and animal physiologist.
