What you'll study

The Health Information Professionals concentration requires 9 credit hours of prescribed coursework; those 9 credits count toward the MLS programs 14 credits of electives. Required and elective courses include:

• LI 881 Health Sciences Librarianship (3 hours) — core concentration course.
• Students must take two of the following 3-hour electives:
• LI 800 Introduction to Informatics (3 hours)
• LI 819 Information Retrieval (3 hours)
• LI 828 Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response for Information Professionals (3 hours)
• LI 833 Resources and Services for Diverse Populations (3 hours)
• LI 886 Consumer Health Information (3 hours)

Within the wider MLS curriculum students also take core theory courses, tools courses (cataloging, classification, information retrieval and repackaging, needs assessment, service planning and evaluation, and use of print/electronic sources), applications courses (information transfer, global information infrastructure, management, and technology), electives on current issues, and a capstone experience. SLIM combines faculty-taught theory with practitioner-led electives and frequent practitioner interactions to support professional networking.
