What you'll study

The curriculum blends theological formation with counseling coursework provided by the seminary's Graduate Department of Counseling. Sample areas of study include:

• Biblical psychology — examining the relationship between psychology and theology and presenting a theology of integration.
• Counseling theories — review of predominant contemporary counseling models to develop a biblical framework for practice.
• Counseling methods & techniques — practical skills, methods and techniques used in Christian and pastoral counseling.
• Pre-marital & marital counseling — preparation for engaging couples before and during marriage, including intervention for struggling marriages.
• Leadership in the local church — topics such as servant leadership, mentoring, visionary leadership and leading change in ministry contexts.

Entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold a four-year bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) from a recognized institution. Graduates of Bible colleges, liberal arts colleges and state universities are encouraged to apply. Candidates with a GPA below 2.5 or degrees from non-accredited institutions may be admitted on academic restriction. Applicants without a bachelor’s degree may be considered if they meet specified ministry experience and research/writing requirements. All applicants must provide a spiritual life reference; official transcripts are required for admission. International applicants must supply TESOL scores and evidence of financial support.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for pastoral counseling and related lay counseling ministries within churches and Christian institutions. Typical roles include pastoral counselor, pastoral care provider, church counselor and positions in Christian schools or ministry settings where theologically-informed counseling is needed. The degree also supports broader ministry activities such as preaching, teaching and cross-cultural work.
