What you'll study

The program requires 120 credit hours and combines general education, core major courses and a 21-credit concentration. Core and related courses include communication, statistics, public administration and management topics plus specialized public safety classes. Select courses listed in the catalogue include:

The program offers four concentrations (each 21 credit hours):

• Criminal Justice: e.g., CJMO 204 Introduction to Criminal Justice System; CJMO 305 Fundamentals of Criminal Law; CJMO 403 Criminal Investigations; CJMO 401 Ethics in Criminal Justice; CJMO 402 Community Resources in Corrections.
• Emergency and Disaster Management: e.g., EDMO 300 Homeland Security Organization; EDMO 301 Emergency Planning; EDMO 305 Emergency & Disaster Incident Command; EDMO 400 Border and Coastal Security; EDMO 406 National Disaster Management.
• Emergency Medical Systems: core EMS courses such as EMSO 301 Emergency and Disaster Management, EMSO 307 Safety and Risk Management, plus EMS finance and ethics offerings.
• Fire Administration: concentration coursework focuses on fire service management, legal/social issues and related EMS/incident management topics.

Entry requirements

The catalogue requires a minimum grade of C in all major and related courses and specifically in ECON 201-202, ENGL 101-102 and COMM 103. A minimum grade of C- is acceptable for other transfer courses except ENGL 101-102 and COMM 103 which must meet the C minimum. Courses used to meet General Education requirements may not be double-counted toward major requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for administrative and leadership roles across Fire and EMS, criminal justice agencies, and emergency and disaster management organizations. The degree supports employment at municipal, county, state and federal levels and aims to develop skills for supervisory, planning and incident-management positions.
