What you'll study

Coursework builds mathematical, scientific and research skills across four years and trains students in technical communication. The recommended first- and second-year sequence mirrors the Physics major; upper-level courses are selected with an advisor based on the student’s interests. All majors complete a mentored research project and are required to finish a Capstone Project to graduate.

Entry requirements

The program sits within Marietta College’s liberal arts curriculum; specific course sequences and elective choices are determined in consultation with an advisor. Students who earn qualifying AP Physics scores may receive college credit toward certain classes. Internships are highly encouraged but not mandatory for graduation.

Career prospects

Graduates have moved into graduate study and technical employment. Typical graduate destinations listed by the program include MS and PhD programs at institutions such as Boston University, California Institute of Technology, Case Western Reserve, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, UC–Davis and Yale. Employer and profession examples provided by the department include roles at NASA Glenn Research Center, 3M Company, the U.S. Navy (officer and nuclear specialist), Rapid TPC (CEO), and academic positions such as physics professor at the University of Toledo. Common pathways noted are entry-level technical jobs, licensure as a high school physics teacher, or continuation to graduate or professional school; the Applied Physics major also frequently feeds into Marietta’s Engineering Dual-Degree options with Case Western Reserve University, Washington University in St. Louis, and West Virginia University.
