Programme overview

The Mathematics major combines a liberal arts core with concentrated mathematical coursework. Students establish a foundation in calculus and may explore applied tracks such as Probability, Numerical Analysis and Financial Mathematics, or pursue theoretical topics. The program also includes a BIG Problems course that partners students with industry, nonprofit or government clients to apply mathematics to real problems.

What you'll study

Coursework emphasizes calculus-based mathematics alongside elective study in probability, numerical methods, financial mathematics and theoretical subjects. Students learn to use graphing calculators and advanced mathematical software so they can focus on concepts and proofs rather than manual computation. Every major completes a senior capstone project under one-to-one faculty supervision; projects range from expository treatments to partial work on open problems, are written up as formal papers and presented to faculty and peers. Exceptional projects may be presented at regional or national conferences or submitted for publication.

Entry requirements

In addition to Marietta's liberal arts core, majors must complete in-depth mathematics courses taught by department faculty. The department awards AP credit for mathematics: a score of 3 on AP Statistics grants credit for MATH 223. Mathematics graduates from Marietta enter a variety of fields and graduate programs.
