See the degree grade →An undergraduate program that trains students to work on the business side of energy and resource development, combining liberal arts with applied skills in land, mineral and renewable project negotiation. Suited to students who want a commercially-focused role in oil & gas, wind, solar, carbon projects or related government and legal settings.
Marietta College's Land and Energy Management major is an accredited undergraduate program preparing students for the public-facing, business roles in energy project development. Accreditation by the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) is a defining feature: it gives students access to national scholarships and enables graduates to sit for the Registered Professional Landman exam.
The curriculum blends Marietta's liberal arts core with a rigorous set of courses across business, geology, environmental science, communications, writing, mathematics and computing. Students may broaden technical options through a minor in energy systems studies or energy systems engineering. Practical experience via an internship is a program expectation.
The program requires completion of the college's liberal arts core alongside the major coursework; specific admissions criteria are handled by Marietta College admissions and the Department of Business & Economics. An internship is required to graduate.
Graduates enter roles with oil and gas operators, midstream companies, land management firms, utilities, government agencies, law firms and financial institutions. The program reports that 100% of Marietta's Land & Energy Management graduates in 2024 and 2025 passed the Registered Landman exam, and 88% of graduates over the past five years were employed or in graduate school within six months of graduating. The AAPL reports an average compensation of $93,000 for professionals with 0–5 years' experience.
Students who join AAPL as student members are eligible for national scholarship opportunities. The Landman Scholarship Trust offers individual awards in the range of $2,500–$5,000. Within the college, majors who maintain a 3.2 GPA in the major and overall may be eligible for induction to Tau Pi Phi, which provides additional experiential opportunities such as participating in the national Tau Pi Phi Business Case Study Competition.
