The MSW curriculum combines foundation and advanced-level coursework with practicum placements to develop practice, policy and research competence. Core topics typically include human behaviour in the social environment, social welfare policy and services, social work research methods, diversity and cultural competence, ethical practice, and strategies for working with individuals, families and groups.

In the advanced sequence students focus on specialised practice areas such as clinical practice with individuals and families, community and organisational practice, and interventions for children, youth and families. A substantial field education component places students in human service agencies where they apply classroom learning under supervision; practicum settings often include mental health clinics, hospitals, schools, child welfare agencies and community organisations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. While a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited programme can make candidates eligible for advanced standing, applicants with other undergraduate degrees are welcome and typically enter the full MSW sequence.
