What you'll study

This master’s blends core geographic concepts with technical cartography and spatial analysis. Typical modules cover Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartographic design and visualisation, spatial statistics and geospatial programming (e.g. Python for GIS). Students also study research methods, geographic theory and ethics in spatial data use. The programme usually offers a choice between a research thesis, a professional practicum/project, or a capstone coursework option.

• Core topics: GIS principles and applications, cartographic theory and map design, remote sensing and image analysis, spatial data management.
• Technical skills: database design for spatial data, geoprocessing, web mapping, geospatial programming and reproducible workflows.
• Analytical methods: spatial statistics, modeling of human–environment interactions, network and accessibility analysis.
• Applied components: applied mapping projects, practicum with external partners, field methods and data collection techniques.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold an accredited bachelor’s degree in geography, earth sciences, environmental studies, planning, computer science, or another related discipline. A strong academic record and evidence of quantitative or technical ability are important. Typical application materials include transcripts, a personal statement outlining research or professional goals, two or three letters of recommendation, and a CV or résumé.

While prior coursework in GIS or statistics is beneficial, applicants without formal GIS training but with quantitative aptitude may be considered and advised to take preparatory courses. Some programmes may invite a portfolio of maps or visual work if the focus is cartographic design. International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements.
