What you'll study

The BSW curriculum combines foundational liberal arts coursework with professional social work knowledge and practice. Core subject areas include human behaviour and the social environment, social welfare policy and services, social work research methods, and practice skills across the lifespan (individuals, families, groups and communities). Students take modules on diversity, cultural humility, trauma-informed practice, ethics and professional identity, and program evaluation.

A central element of the programme is supervised field education: students complete structured practicum placements in community agencies where they apply classroom learning to casework, advocacy, community organising and prevention work. Courses are typically taught in small seminar formats, emphasising reflective practice, critical thinking and collaborative learning. Electives and integrative projects allow students to tailor study toward interests such as mental health, child and family services, restorative justice or community development.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Admissions decisions are based on academic records, a personal statement describing interest in social work and commitment to social justice, and at least one reference—preferably from a teacher, employer or community leader. Typical expectations include a solid record in secondary-school coursework, especially in English and social sciences, and evidence of meaningful community or volunteer involvement.

Mature applicants with relevant life or work experience are considered; some programmes may request an interview. Students admitted to the BSW should be prepared for background checks or agency screening required for field placements and must meet any site-specific health or training requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates with a BSW are prepared for entry-level professional roles in a variety of settings, including child and family services, community and social service agencies, mental health centres, schools, healthcare settings, and probation and restorative-justice programmes. Typical job titles include caseworker, community outreach specialist, care coordinator, youth worker and residential services staff.

The BSW also provides a pathway to advanced study: many graduates pursue a Master of Social Work (MSW) to qualify for clinical licensure, advanced practice, clinical supervision or specialised leadership roles. The programme emphasises transferable skills—assessment, intervention, advocacy, programme planning and evaluation—that are valued across human-service sectors.
