What you'll study

This programme blends core education theory with subject-specific methods and practical school experience. The curriculum covers child and adolescent development, learning theory, classroom management, inclusive and differentiated instruction, assessment and feedback, curriculum planning, and contemporary issues in education. Students select pathways focusing on specific levels (such as elementary, middle, or secondary) and methods related to their chosen subject specialism.

• Foundations of Education: history and philosophy of education, ethics, and the role of schooling in society.
• Learning and Development: cognitive and social development across childhood and adolescence, theories of learning.
• Subject-Specific Methods: pedagogy and planning for English, mathematics, science, social studies or other subject areas at the chosen level.
• Assessment and Curriculum: designing assessments, data-informed planning, standards-based curriculum development.
• Classroom Practice and Management: behaviour management strategies, creating inclusive classroom environments, restorative approaches.
• Professional Development and Leadership: reflective practice, coaching and mentoring, action research, and strategies for continuous professional learning.
• School-Based Practicum: supervised placements in partner schools with progressively increased responsibility, culminating in a capstone teaching or portfolio project.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a recognised secondary school qualification (such as a high-school diploma or equivalent). Admission normally requires academic transcripts, a personal statement describing motivations for teaching and experience with young people, and at least one academic or professional reference. Many applicants are expected to demonstrate relevant experience in school settings or youth work, either through paid work, volunteering or observation.

Selection may include an interview and tasks to assess communication, subject knowledge and suitability for working with children. Successful applicants must satisfy background and safeguarding checks and meet any health and immunisation requirements set by placement schools.

Graduates leave prepared for classroom roles and for careers that support teacher growth and school improvement. Typical destinations include:

• Qualified teacher in primary, middle or secondary education (subject to meeting local teacher certification requirements)
• Instructional coach, mentor or curriculum coordinator within schools or trusts

• Education consultant, trainer or professional development lead for local authorities, non-governmental organisations or publishers
