What you'll study

The MSW curriculum combines foundational social work theory with applied practice and supervised field education. Core subjects typically cover human behaviour in the social environment, social welfare policy and services, research methods for practice, ethics, and culturally responsive practice.

Practice-focused modules explore direct practice with individuals, families and groups, community and organisational practice, and clinical assessment and intervention. Advanced courses allow specialisation in areas such as clinical social work (mental health and psychotherapy), health and medical social work, substance use and trauma-informed practice, child and family services, and macro-level practice including policy analysis and programme development.

Field education is central to the programme and is delivered through sequential practicum placements in diverse New York City settings — for example hospitals, community mental health centres, schools, child welfare agencies and policy organisations. Students also take seminars that integrate practicum experiences with contemporary practice knowledge, supervision, and professional development.

Entry requirements

• Academic background: A recognised bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Applicants with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from an accredited programme may be eligible for advanced standing, which shortens the programme duration.
• GPA and transcripts: Official transcripts are required; competitive applicants typically present a solid undergraduate record. Specific GPA thresholds vary by school and cohort.
• Supporting documents: A personal statement outlining interest in social work, professional goals and relevant experience; a current CV or résumé; and letters of recommendation (usually two or three) from academic or professional referees.
• Experience and fit: Relevant paid or voluntary experience with vulnerable populations, community organisations or social service agencies is highly valued and can strengthen an application.
• Additional requirements: Some programmes require an interview. Admitted students must meet practicum placement prerequisites such as background checks, immunisation records and any health clearances required by placement agencies.

Common career paths include clinical social worker in mental health settings, medical social work in hospitals and clinics, child and family practitioner, school social worker, case manager, community organiser, programme director, and policy analyst.

The MSW is the professional degree that prepares graduates for supervised clinical practice and licensure in New York State; many alumni pursue licensure to become licensed clinical social workers and work in private practice, specialised treatment programmes or leadership roles in human services.
