This degree builds a foundation in analytic and historical philosophy alongside specialised work on Chinese philosophical traditions and cultural practices. Core modules typically include Introduction to Philosophy, Logic and Critical Thinking, Ethics, and History of Philosophy, paired with focused courses such as Classical Chinese Thought, Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhist Philosophy, and Contemporary Chinese Intellectual Trends. Students are encouraged to study modern Mandarin language and literature, classical Chinese texts and translation methods to deepen engagement with primary sources.

The programme emphasises close reading, textual interpretation, comparative approaches, and research skills. You will complete advanced seminars in topics like moral philosophy in East Asia, comparative political thought, and philosophy of religion in Chinese contexts, and undertake a capstone project or senior thesis that integrates philosophical analysis with cultural or linguistic study. Electives from related departments — for example East Asian history, anthropology, religious studies or international studies — are commonly taken to broaden cultural and contextual understanding.

Applicants should hold a standard secondary school qualification for undergraduate entry. Admissions typically consider overall academic record, recommended coursework in humanities or social sciences, and a personal statement outlining your interest in philosophy and Chinese culture. Mature and transfer applicants are welcome; transfer credit is assessed against programme requirements.

International applicants must meet the university's English language proficiency requirement through an approved test or equivalent qualification. While no prior knowledge of Mandarin or Chinese studies is usually required, demonstrated interest — such as coursework, extracurricular activities, or relevant experience — strengthens an application.
