What you'll study

The programme combines core courses in cognition with substantive training in empirical methods and computational tools. Typical subject areas include cognitive psychology (perception, attention, memory), biological bases of behaviour and introductory neuroscience, formal and computational approaches (programming, machine learning, cognitive modelling), linguistics and language processing, and philosophical issues in cognition.

• Core coursework in cognitive theory and the history of cognitive science
• Research methods and statistics for behavioural and cognitive research
• Laboratory practicum and supervised research experience (lab rotations or faculty-mentored projects)
• Programming and data analysis (commonly Python, R and tools for experimental design)
• Electives drawn from psychology, computer science, linguistics, philosophy and neuroscience (e.g. perception, language acquisition, neural networks, human–computer interaction)
• Senior capstone or honours project that integrates empirical and/or computational work

Entry requirements

Entry to the bachelor’s programme requires completion of secondary education or an equivalent qualification. Successful applicants typically demonstrate strong academic performance with solid preparation in mathematics and science; coursework in biology, physics, computer science or advanced mathematics is advantageous. SMU evaluates applications holistically, considering high school grades, recommendations, personal statements and extracurricular experience in research, coding, or relevant clubs.

International applicants must provide evidence of secondary credentials equivalent to U.S. high school completion and meet the university's English proficiency requirements. Transfer applicants should show college-level coursework and a record of academic success; course articulation is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
