What you'll study

This programme combines humanities and social science approaches to explore a chosen region in depth. You will study the political systems, historical developments, economies, cultural practices and languages of one or more world areas. Course work normally includes a mix of core methods classes, region-focused seminars and language study.

• Core methods and theory: comparative area studies, research methods, theory of regionalism and cultural analysis.
• Regional modules: contemporary politics and society of the chosen region, regional history, contemporary issues such as development, migration and transnational networks.
• Language study: progressive language courses relevant to your region (for example, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish or other languages offered by the department).
• Interdisciplinary electives: anthropology, literature, economics, international relations, environmental studies and media as they pertain to the region.
• Experiential learning: internships, community-based projects and a compulsory or optional study abroad semester or short programme to build real-world experience and language proficiency.
• Capstone project: independent research project or senior seminar integrating disciplinary approaches and original research on a regional topic.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised secondary school diploma or equivalent. Admission typically considers academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining your interest in area studies, and at least one academic or professional recommendation. Candidates with prior language study or international experience are particularly well placed.

Standardised tests may be considered where submitted, though many applicants are evaluated primarily on transcripts and supporting materials. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through recognised tests or other institutional measures; additionally, language placement for your chosen regional language will be determined after admission.
