What you'll study

The programme combines core foundation studios, design theory, technical workshops and elective specialisms. Early work emphasises drawing, two- and three-dimensional design principles, colour, materials and basic digital tools. As you progress you take intermediate and advanced studios that explore areas such as visual communication, product and object design, textile and surface design, interaction and service design, print and publication, and exhibition or environmental design.

• Foundation modules: drawing, design fundamentals, colour and composition, materials and processes.
• Technical and digital skills: digital media, vector and raster software, 3D modelling, rapid prototyping and fabrication (laser cutting, 3D printing, workshop practices).
• Theory and context: design history, contemporary design criticism, cultural studies and research methods.
• Professional practice: project management, portfolio development, design entrepreneurship, client- and brief-based projects.
• Capstone / senior project: an extended, independently-directed project that synthesises practical and theoretical learning for exhibition and portfolio presentation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a high-school diploma or equivalent. Admission to art and design programmes typically requires a portfolio of creative work demonstrating observational, conceptual and technical ability. Other materials usually include a personal statement and academic transcripts. International applicants must meet the university's English-language proficiency requirements.
