What you'll study

The programme blends education theory, subject‑specific pedagogy and supervised field experiences. Core areas include foundations of education, child and adolescent development, educational psychology, assessment and classroom management. You will study curriculum design and instructional strategies for diverse learners, literacy methods across the grades, inclusive practices and differentiating instruction for students with special educational needs.

• Foundations and theory: history and philosophy of education, ethics, multicultural education and the role of schools in society.
• Development and learning: cognitive and social development, behaviour management and strategies to support social‑emotional learning.
• Curriculum and pedagogy: methods for teaching literacy, mathematics, science and social studies at the appropriate levels; lesson planning and unit design.
• Assessment and data use: formative and summative assessment, progress monitoring and using data to inform instruction.
• Special and inclusive education: identification and support strategies, IEP processes, co‑teaching models and adaptations.
• Technology and instructional design: educational technology for classroom instruction, digital resources and remote/blended learning strategies.
• Clinical practice: ongoing practicum placements in local schools culminating in an extended student‑teaching internship under faculty and mentor teacher supervision.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high school diploma or equivalent and submit official transcripts. Admissions typically consider academic preparation, a personal statement outlining commitment to teaching, and letters of recommendation. Candidates must meet any state requirements for teacher preparation, which can include background checks and immunisation documentation for practicum placements. Transfer applicants should provide college transcripts and may be asked to meet with the programme director to determine course equivalencies.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for certification and employment as classroom teachers in early childhood, elementary or secondary settings, depending on programme specialization and state licensure requirements. Alumni also pursue roles such as special education teacher, reading or literacy specialist (with additional certification), curriculum coordinator, instructional coach, school support staff, and education roles in community organisations and nonprofit agencies. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in education leadership, school counselling or specialised teaching fields.
