The Area Studies degree is built around an interdisciplinary core that situates a chosen region in global, historical and comparative perspective. You will combine thematic modules with a regional concentration (examples include Latin America, East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, or Africa) and develop proficiency in a relevant language.

• Core modules: comparative area studies theory, research methods for social and cultural analysis, and global processes (migration, development, transnationalism).
• Regional modules: history, politics, society and culture of the chosen region — for example modern Latin American politics, East Asian cultural history, Middle Eastern social movements or European integration.
• Language study: progressive language courses tied to the region; students are encouraged to reach intermediate–advanced proficiency.
