What you'll study

The programme combines a broad liberal-arts history curriculum with specialised courses in medieval and early modern European cultural history. You will study the transformation of European societies after the fall of Rome, the rise of medieval kingdoms, the Byzantine and Islamic worlds' interactions with Europe, the intellectual and artistic currents of the Renaissance, and the social and religious upheavals of the Reformation and early modern period.

• Core historical methods and skills: historical writing and research, historiography, archival research, palaeography and palaeographic transcription.
• Medieval-focused modules: early medieval Europe, feudal societies, the Crusades, Byzantine and Islamic interactions, medieval intellectual and religious culture.
• Early modern-focused modules: Renaissance cultural history, the Reformation and confessionalisation, state formation and diplomacy, early modern science, book history and print culture.
• Language and source work: introductory and reading courses in Latin and, where offered, modern languages relevant to research (e.g. French, Italian, German); intensive source seminars using primary documents.
• Capstone and experiential learning: senior seminar or honours thesis, internships with museums, archives or heritage organisations, and opportunities for undergraduate research projects and study abroad in Europe.

Entry requirements

Applicants should present a high-school diploma or equivalent with strong grades in humanities and social sciences. Ramapo College normally expects evidence of strong written communication skills; a prior course in history is helpful but not always required.
