What you'll study

This interdisciplinary programme combines regional language study with courses in history, politics, literature, economics and cultural studies focused on one or more geographic areas (for example Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa or the Middle East). Core components typically include introductory and advanced language instruction, regional history and politics, comparative area studies methods, and a senior capstone or thesis project. Students choose electives that allow thematic concentration — such as migration and diaspora, development and governance, media and cultural expression, or religion and society — and are encouraged to take modules in closely related departments such as political science, anthropology, economics and environmental studies.

Practical learning is emphasised: students usually complete a research methods course, undertake primary-source work in translation or fieldwork, and have opportunities for internships and study abroad or exchange programmes to gain first‑hand regional experience. The programme can be structured to include a double major or minor in a language or discipline, and many students complete a capstone seminar that synthesises language proficiency, regional knowledge and independent research.

Entry requirements

McDaniel generally expects applicants to hold a recognised secondary-school qualification and to demonstrate strong academic achievement across relevant subjects. Successful applicants typically show evidence of language ability or a willingness to begin intensive language study, academic references, and a personal statement outlining interest in regional studies and international issues. International applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency where English is not their first language.

Transfer students may be asked to submit college transcripts and examples of previous coursework in the humanities or social sciences.
