What you'll study

This programme combines technical building science with applied design and construction practice. You study core topics such as architectural graphics and drafting, building materials and methods, construction technology, building codes, and structural principles for low-rise buildings. Studio and lab-based modules develop practical skills in CAD and BIM software, digital modelling, construction documentation, and specification writing.

• Architectural Graphics & Drafting: manual and digital drawing, orthographic projection, detailing.
• CAD/BIM and Digital Modelling: instruction and projects using industry-standard tools for 2D drafting and 3D modelling.
• Building Materials & Methods: properties, selection and application of common materials; construction sequencing.
• Structural Fundamentals: statics, load paths and basic structural systems for architectural applications.
• Building Systems: introductory HVAC, plumbing and electrical concepts with emphasis on integration into architectural documentation.
• Construction Estimating & Project Management: quantity take-offs, cost estimating basics and construction scheduling.
• Building Codes and Professional Practice: code interpretation, contract administration and workplace ethics.
• Capstone/Practicum: a culminating project or internship that consolidates technical design, documentation and collaboration skills.

The curriculum also includes general education modules in mathematics, physics and communications to underpin technical competency and professional practice. Studio projects and lab work emphasise teamwork, client briefs and real-world constraints.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high-school diploma (or equivalent) with demonstrated competence in algebra and geometry; coursework in physics or a related science is advantageous. Admissions typically consider the overall academic record, a statement of purpose, and any relevant practical experience. A portfolio of technical drawings, CAD/BIM work or construction-related projects can strengthen an application but is not always mandatory.

Fairmont State accepts applications from transfer students with previous college-level credits in technology, engineering, or building trades. Mature applicants with relevant work experience in construction or design are also considered.
