The Biochemistry with a Foundation Year BSc (Hons) is a four-year programme that begins with a preparatory foundation year for students who lack traditional science qualifications. It is designed for learners who want a firm grounding in core scientific and study skills before progressing to degree-level modules in biochemistry, molecular biology and laboratory practice.

What you'll study

The programme begins with a foundation year that covers essential mathematics, chemistry and biology concepts alongside academic skills such as laboratory safety, data analysis and scientific communication. After successful completion of the foundation year you progress to three years of degree study covering the molecular basis of life.

  • Core biochemical principles: structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates; enzyme kinetics; metabolic pathways and regulation.
  • Molecular and cellular biology: gene expression, DNA replication and repair, cell signalling and membrane biology.
  • Practical laboratory skills: wet-lab techniques (spectroscopy, chromatography, electrophoresis), microscopy, quantitative assay design and safe handling of biological materials.
  • Computational and analytical methods: basic bioinformatics, statistical analysis of experimental data and use of specialist software for sequence and structural analysis.
  • Advanced topics and optional modules: structural biology, enzymology, metabolic disorders, synthetic biology and analytical techniques, typically taken in the later years to reflect students’ interests.
  • Research project: an independent, supervised research project in the final year that develops experimental design, data interpretation and scientific writing abilities.

Entry requirements

The foundation year route is intended for applicants who do not meet the conventional A-level or equivalent entry requirements for a direct-entry BSc in Biochemistry. It is suitable for mature students, those with vocational qualifications, or applicants whose prior study did not include substantial science content.

  • Applicants are normally expected to demonstrate an interest in science and some evidence of numeracy and literacy. Typical supporting qualifications include vocational science awards, access courses or combinations of GCSEs and other level 3 qualifications.
  • GCSE-level English and mathematics are usually required (or recognised equivalents). International applicants should meet the university's English language requirements.
  • Admissions decisions will consider personal statements, references and any relevant experience; applicants with work experience in scientific or healthcare settings and mature applicants are welcome to apply.
  • Successful completion of the foundation year is required to progress to the three-year honours programme in Biochemistry.
