What you'll study

This programme combines core musicianship, applied lessons, ensemble experience and music technology with broader liberal-arts study. You will take modules in music theory and ear training, music history and world musics, harmony and counterpoint, arranging and orchestration, and composition. A sustained applied-private-lesson sequence develops instrumental or vocal technique, culminating in recitals or senior projects.

• Performance and ensembles: chamber music, large ensembles, jazz combo, musical theatre workshops and orchestral opportunities to build repertoire and stage experience.
• Applied musicianship: individual lessons, practice pedagogy, diction and stagecraft for singers, and performance seminars.
• Music technology and production: recording techniques, digital audio workstations, mixing, MIDI and electronic music composition.
• Composition and arranging: song-writing, film scoring basics, arranging for small and large ensembles.
• Academic study: musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies and courses that develop critical listening and research skills.
• Capstone experience: senior recital or portfolio project and opportunities for collaborative projects with theatre students.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high-school diploma or recognised secondary-school qualification (or equivalent). Admission typically requires a successful audition and interview demonstrating performance ability, stylistic range and musical potential. International students must meet English-language proficiency standards.

• Submitted materials usually include transcripts, a personal statement and letters of recommendation.
• An audition will commonly ask for contrasting repertoire, sight-reading and may include prepared pieces and technical studies; audition may be in-person or recorded/live via video, depending on circumstances.
• Students without formal qualifications in theory or performance may be admitted but could be placed in preparatory musicianship courses.
