What you'll study

This professionally oriented bachelor’s degree combines core nursing theory, clinical skills and supervised practice placements with pathway-specific modules in Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing. Across the programme students study human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment and clinical skills, communication and therapeutic relationships, public and community health, ethics and law in nursing, and mental health nursing.

All students complete structured clinical placements across acute, community and primary care settings to develop safe, person-centred care. In later years you choose a pathway:

• Nursing Administration: leadership and management in healthcare, service improvement, workforce planning, finance for healthcare managers and quality and safety.
• Nursing Research: research methods, statistics for health professionals, evidence-based practice, project design and a supervised dissertation or research project.
• Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical assessment, specialist practice modules (e.g. medical-surgical, critical care, paediatrics or community nursing depending on availability), and extended supervised clinical practice.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, simulation and skills laboratory sessions, case-based learning, reflective practice portfolios and supervised practice in partner hospitals and community organisations. Assessment mixes written exams, OSCEs (objective structured clinical examinations), reflective assignments, practice assessments and a final-year project or capstone placement.

Entry requirements

Typical entry requires completion of secondary education with passes in science subjects (biology or human biology and chemistry or equivalent are usually required or strongly recommended) and proficiency in English. Applicants normally need to provide academic transcripts, a personal statement, and references. Additional selection steps commonly include an interview and/or an aptitude test focused on communication and suitability for professional practice.

Successful applicants must meet professional fitness-to-practise requirements for clinical work: this typically includes a satisfactory criminal background check, occupational health screening and up-to-date immunisations.
