This programme builds a foundation in both physical and human geography before moving into specialised cartography and geospatial science. Core topics include landforms and geomorphology, climatology and biogeography, urban and economic geography, and social and cultural geography. Technical and applied modules cover geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, spatial analysis and statistics, database design for spatial data, cartographic design and map production, GPS and field surveying, and programming for geospatial applications (commonly Python or related scripting).

Students typically take general education requirements alongside major courses, progress from introductory to advanced modules, and choose electives such as transportation geography, environmental management, natural hazards, or geovisualisation. Practical learning is emphasised through laboratory sessions using industry-standard software (for example ArcGIS and open-source alternatives), fieldwork across California’s diverse landscapes, and a capstone or senior project that develops a professional portfolio of maps, analyses and written reports.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised secondary school qualification or equivalent. Admissions consider the overall academic record, evidence of quantitative ability (for example coursework in mathematics or statistics), and readiness for university study. Where required, applicants should provide official transcripts and may be asked for a personal statement, references or examples of relevant coursework or projects.

For applicants without prior exposure to GIS or geography, introductory readiness can be demonstrated through related science, social science or computing subjects.
