What you'll study

This master's programme combines advanced coursework in communication sciences with supervised clinical practicum. Core teaching covers anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, speech and hearing science, phonetics, language development and disorders, voice and resonance, fluency disorders, motor speech disorders, adult neurogenic communication disorders (including aphasia), paediatric language disorders, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), aural rehabilitation and dysphagia assessment and management.

Students also study research methods and statistics, evidence-based practice, and professional issues and ethics in speech-language pathology. The curriculum typically includes a practicum sequence in the university speech-language-hearing clinic and placements in community settings to build diagnostic and intervention skills. A culminating clinical competency assessment, practicum hour requirements, and either a research thesis or capstone/project are common elements of the programme.

Entry requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Applicants with an undergraduate major in communication sciences and disorders are preferred; applicants from related fields may be admitted if they have completed prerequisite coursework (such as anatomy and physiology of speech/hearing, phonetics, child language, and introductory communication disorders).
• A competitive undergraduate GPA; applicants are expected to demonstrate solid academic performance. Some applicants with lower GPAs may be considered if other elements of the application are strong.
• Submission of transcripts, a personal statement that outlines professional goals and relevant experience, and a current CV/resume.
• Letters of recommendation (commonly two to three) from academic instructors or clinical supervisors who can attest to the applicant's academic potential and suitability for clinical work.
• GRE requirements vary; applicants should consult the programme for current testing policies. International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements.
• Successful applicants should be prepared to undergo background checks and meet any health and immunisation requirements for clinical placements.
