What you'll study

This PhD combines core doctoral coursework, advanced study in specific levels and methods, and sustained research leading to a dissertation. Core areas typically include advanced research methods and statistics, qualitative inquiry, programme evaluation, learning theory and adult professional development. Students also take specialist modules that reflect the level and method emphasis they choose (for example, elementary literacy methods, secondary content pedagogy, special education practice, or STEM instructional design).

• Research methods and statistics: multivariate analysis, mixed methods, and design-based research.
• Theory and foundations: contemporary theories of teacher learning, curriculum theory, and sociocultural perspectives on classroom practice.
• Specific levels and methods: advanced courses in level-specific pedagogy (elementary, middle, secondary), subject-methodology seminars, assessment and curriculum design for the chosen level.
• Professional development and leadership: designing, implementing and evaluating PD initiatives; coaching and mentoring; school and district change strategies.

Students work closely with faculty advisers to tailor coursework and research to their interests, and are expected to progress through qualifying/comprehensive examinations prior to dissertation proposal and defence.

Applicants should hold a recognised master's degree in education or a closely related field and demonstrate a strong academic record. Admissions emphasise professional experience in teaching, curriculum leadership, instructional coaching or related roles.
