This programme combines lifespan human development theory with applied skills in family studies and service delivery. Core study areas include biological, cognitive and socio-emotional development from infancy to later adulthood, family systems and dynamics, and the social and policy contexts that affect families and communities.

• Foundations of Human Development: lifespan development, developmental psychology and typical/atypical trajectories.
• Family Studies: family systems theory, parenting education, couple relationships and intergenerational issues.
• Child and Adolescent Development: early childhood development, school-age and adolescent growth, learning and behaviour management.
• Adult Development and Ageing: stages of adult life, caregiving, retirement and late-life issues.
• Research and Assessment: research methods, applied statistics, developmental assessment and programme evaluation.
• Service Delivery Skills: case management, counselling fundamentals, group facilitation, multicultural competence and ethics.
• Policy and Community Practice: family policy, advocacy, grant writing and community resource coordination.
• Practicum/Internship and Capstone: supervised field experience in community agencies, schools or early childhood centres, culminating in an applied project or capstone that integrates theory and practice.

Students progress through a mix of lectures, seminars, lab-based observation, and supervised field placements. Electives permit specialisation in areas such as early childhood services, youth development, or family life education.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a high school diploma or recognised equivalent. Admission typically considers cumulative high-school performance and preparation in relevant subjects; courses in English, social sciences and biology or health are advantageous. Some applicants enter via transfer from community colleges with credit for completed general education and introductory development courses.

As this programme includes practicum placements, students may be required to complete background checks, health screenings or immunisations before placement.
