What you'll study

The programme combines social science, natural science and policy perspectives to prepare students to analyse and design sustainable solutions at local to regional scales. Students study core concepts in sustainability theory, systems thinking and research methods and then focus on applied topics through elective modules and a culminating project or thesis.

• Core topics: sustainability theory and ethics; systems thinking and modelling; interdisciplinary research methods; quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
• Typical electives: environmental policy and governance; climate adaptation and resilience; sustainable food systems and agriculture; renewable energy and energy policy; urban sustainability and planning; environmental justice; conservation and ecosystem services.
• Skills training: GIS and spatial analysis, environmental assessment, stakeholder engagement and facilitation, sustainability metrics and reporting, grant-writing and project design.
• Capstone options: students normally complete either an independent research thesis or an applied professional project in collaboration with campus units, local governments, non-profits or industry partners.

Courses are taught by faculty across departments and research centres such as the Center for Global & Regional Environmental Research, enabling applied, cross-disciplinary supervision and project placements.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (for example environmental science, biology, geography, planning, public policy, engineering, sociology, economics or a related field) with evidence of strong academic performance. Admissions committees look for applicants who demonstrate analytical ability and commitment to sustainability practice or research.

• Official academic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
• A personal statement describing academic background, professional interests, and intended focus within sustainability studies.
• Two academic or professional letters of recommendation.
• A current CV or résumé outlining relevant experience, internships or volunteer work.
• International applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency where applicable (e.g. recognised English tests or previous education in English).

Programme requirements may also consider relevant professional experience; applicants are advised to consult the department’s admissions guidance for any additional materials and specific GPA expectations.
