What you'll study

The programme combines theoretical understanding of neurodevelopmental and cognitive bases of dyslexia and specific learning difficulties with practical assessment and intervention approaches. Typical taught modules cover: diagnostic assessment and psychometric testing; literacy and language difficulties across the lifespan; evidence-based intervention and teaching strategies; assistive technology and inclusive classroom practice; and policy, law and professional ethics relating to special educational needs.

Study usually culminates in an extended research project, professional portfolio or dissertation that allows you to investigate a specific area of practice or research in depth. The course places emphasis on applying research to practice, developing competency in standardised assessment tools, report writing and designing bespoke intervention plans.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree from a recognised institution. Relevant professional experience working with learners with dyslexia or SpLD — for example as a qualified teacher, specialist tutor, teaching assistant or educational support worker — is highly desirable. Candidates with a postgraduate diploma or prior specialist SpLD qualifications may also be considered.

Where English is not the first language, evidence of English language proficiency at a standard appropriate for postgraduate study will be required. Applicants should submit a personal statement outlining their experience with SpLD, reasons for study and a CV detailing relevant employment.

Career prospects

Graduates typically progress into specialist roles within education and related services. Common career destinations include specialist dyslexia teachers, SEN coordinators (SENCOs), assessment tutors and advisers for schools, further education and private assessment practices. The programme also supports progression into roles within educational support services, charities, learning centres and higher education disability teams.

While this Master's develops diagnostic and intervention skills valued by employers and parents, some professional roles (for example statutory educational psychologist or practitioner psychologist) require additional, specific professional qualifications and registration. Graduates often combine the specialist expertise gained on the programme with further professional accreditation or teaching qualifications to expand career options.
