The Mechanical Engineering BEng/MEng (Hons) at the University of Hull is a practical, design-led undergraduate degree that develops skills in mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, manufacturing and systems design. What you'll study

This programme combines core engineering science with applied design and manufacture. Early years build a firm foundation in mathematics, mechanics, materials, thermofluids and electrical fundamentals, with laboratory work and computing skills (CAD/CAM, finite element methods, data acquisition). As you progress you study dynamics, control engineering, advanced materials, heat transfer, internal combustion and energy systems, and manufacturing processes.

Project work is a central element: team design projects and laboratory-based modules develop practical skills, while an individual final-year project lets you investigate a specialist topic and demonstrate independent engineering competence. The MEng route includes more advanced analytical and research-orientated modules and a larger, research-style dissertation or major design project to prepare you for Chartered Engineer status or postgraduate study.

Entry requirements

The programme welcomes applicants with a strong mathematical background. Typical entrants will have A-level (or equivalent) qualifications including Mathematics plus Physics or an engineering-related subject. Vocational qualifications such as BTECs with substantial maths content and a compatible science/engineering component are usually considered.

International applicants are expected to hold equivalent qualifications, such as an International Baccalaureate with higher-level mathematics. Applicants should also meet the university's requirements for English language proficiency. GCSE-level passes in English and Mathematics (or recognised equivalents) are normally required.

Admissions consider the whole application, including personal statement, references and, where provided, relevant practical experience. Mature applicants with relevant work experience are also encouraged to apply.

Graduates move into a wide range of technical and commercial roles across sectors including automotive, aerospace, energy and power generation, marine and offshore, manufacturing, defence, and consulting. Common job titles include mechanical design engineer, production/manufacturing engineer, project engineer, R&D engineer, systems engineer and maintenance/reliability engineer.

Completing the MEng or accruing appropriate work experience helps prepare graduates for professional registration routes such as Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng), subject to meeting the relevant professional body requirements. Many graduates also progress to specialised masters-level study or take up roles in management, technical sales, and engineering consultancy.
