What you'll study

The programme combines advanced coursework in auditory and vestibular science with supervised clinical practice. Core topics typically include auditory physiology and neuroscience, diagnostic audiology (adult and paediatric), speech and hearing assessment, electrophysiology, vestibular assessment and management, amplification and assistive listening devices, cochlear implants and other implantable devices, hearing conservation, counselling and aetiology of hearing loss.

Students also study professional practice subjects such as clinical reasoning, ethics, multidisciplinary team work and research methods. The course normally features substantial practical clinical placements in a variety of settings (tertiary hospitals, community clinics, paediatric and aged-care services and private practice), plus a research or clinical project that develops skills in evidence-based practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as audiology, speech pathology, psychology, biomedical science, health science or a closely related area. A strong academic record in undergraduate studies is required; specific grade or GPA thresholds are set by the university and should be checked on the UWA admissions pages.

Additional entry conditions commonly include demonstrated knowledge in human biology or physiology and, for some applicants, a selection interview. International applicants must meet the university's English language proficiency requirements. Successful applicants will need to meet professional suitability checks such as immunisation, police clearance and working-with-children checks before clinical placements.

Graduates qualify for professional practice as clinical audiologists and can work in a broad range of roles. Graduates may also pursue roles in research, clinical education, product development and sales within the hearing device industry, or progress to doctoral study. Membership of the national professional body and meeting national accreditation standards are usual requirements for clinical practice.
