What you'll study

This programme is a supervised, research-led doctoral degree culminating in an original thesis. Candidates devise a focused research project in an area of theology, ethics, biblical studies, church history, practical theology or interdisciplinary fields that intersect with religious studies. Typical work includes sustained primary-source analysis, engagement with contemporary scholarly debates, and development of theoretical or methodological frameworks appropriate to the chosen topic.

Although there are no taught modules in the conventional sense, distance-research students participate in a structured research training programme. Training commonly covers research methods, digital humanities tools, academic writing and publication, research ethics, and presentation skills. Candidates also take part in virtual seminar series, online reading groups and periodic doctoral training events alongside campus-based students.

Progress is monitored through an initial confirmation review, annual reports, and a final viva voce examination. Depending on the project and supervisor agreement, students may be required to attend short on-campus residency or intensive workshops to present work and receive face-to-face feedback.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally hold a master’s degree by research or taught postgraduate degree with a substantial research component in theology, religious studies or a closely related discipline. Exceptional candidates with a strong first degree and demonstrable research experience may be considered. A clearly articulated research proposal and two academic references are required.

All candidates must identify potential supervisors whose expertise matches the proposed project. Where English is not the applicant’s first language, proof of English language proficiency at the level required by the university is necessary. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to attend a remote interview or provide a sample of academic writing.

Graduates of a theology PhD pursue a range of careers. Many remain in higher education and research, securing roles as lecturers, postdoctoral researchers or research fellows. Others move into theological colleges, ministerial and pastoral leadership, chaplaincy, or training roles within religious organisations.

Transferable skills gained during the doctorate — critical analysis, project management, advanced writing, and public engagement — are valued in cultural heritage, libraries and archives, public policy, charities and NGOs, publishing, and education sectors. Some graduates also work as consultants, writers, or communicators on religion-related issues in media and civic organisations.
