What you'll study

This four-year honours degree combines in-depth study of one or two secondary teaching subjects with professional coursework in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. Early years focus on foundational education studies: learning theory, adolescent development, classroom management and inclusive practice. Core education units cover curriculum design, assessment and reporting, behaviour management, use of ICT in teaching, and Indigenous perspectives in Australian education.

• Subject-specialist studies in areas such as English, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Humanities and Social Sciences, Languages, Health and Physical Education, or Technologies
• Professional education units addressing pedagogy for adolescents, differentiated instruction, assessment and feedback, and classroom leadership
• Progressive school-based professional experience (practicum) placements of increasing length conducted in partnership with local primary and secondary schools
• Specialist topics including inclusive education, teaching students with diverse needs, behaviour support, and contemporary curriculum issues
• An honours research component in the final year involving a supervised project or thesis that develops research skills relevant to educational practice and policy

Students undertake supervised practicums which integrate classroom experience with on-campus professional coursework; these placements are a compulsory component required for teacher registration.

Entry requirements

Admission is based on successful completion of a recognised secondary-school qualification or equivalent tertiary study, together with meeting the program's subject prerequisites and selection criteria. Applicants are normally expected to have demonstrated competence in senior secondary English and have suitable background in their chosen teaching subject(s).

• Domestic applicants: academic achievement at senior secondary level (or equivalent) with consideration of subject prerequisites and overall academic record
• International applicants: completion of an equivalent secondary qualification and evidence of English language proficiency as required by the University
• Selection processes may consider academic transcripts, a personal statement or interview, and evidence of motivation to teach
• All students must meet mandatory professional requirements prior to placement, which typically include a criminal history check (working with children clearance), relevant immunisations, and first-aid and child protection training

Graduates are qualified to seek secondary teacher registration and employment in government, independent and Catholic secondary schools. The honours research component also prepares graduates for roles that require strong research and analytical skills.
