It suits students with strong aptitude in mathematics and physical sciences who want a career in structural, geotechnical, transport, water or construction engineering and who aim to pursue professional engineer accreditation.
This accredited honours programme combines foundation engineering and science in the early years with progressively specialised civil engineering subjects. The degree begins with core engineering fundamentals such as calculus, linear algebra, physics, materials science, engineering programming and technical communication. From the second year, you will study civil-specific topics including statics and dynamics, structural analysis, mechanics of materials, soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, hydrology and water resources, and transportation engineering.
Advanced, final-year subjects emphasise design and professional practice: reinforced concrete and steel design, foundation engineering, construction management and procurement, environmental aspects of civil engineering, reliability and risk assessment, and engineering ethics. The honours component is delivered through an individual or team-based capstone design project or research project that integrates technical design, project documentation and professional responsibilities.
Practical learning is embedded throughout the degree via laboratory classes, computer modelling and simulation (finite element analysis, CAD, hydraulic modelling), surveying and site-work exercises, and industry-linked design projects. Opportunities exist for work-integrated learning, industry placements and interdisciplinary collaboration with architecture, urban planning and environmental specialists.
Admission typically requires completion of secondary education with strong achievement in mathematics and at least one physical science subject. Applicants are expected to have studied advanced or specialist mathematics; physics is highly recommended. Domestic applicants usually apply via the state tertiary admission system and selection is based on secondary-school results or recognised equivalents.
International applicants must meet university English-language requirements and provide equivalent secondary qualification evidence. Alternative pathways include recognised foundation or diploma programmes and admission via articulation from relevant tertiary programmes. Applicants with prior tertiary study or relevant industry experience may be considered for credit or alternate entry pathways.
Graduates move into roles across public and private sectors in infrastructure planning, design, construction and asset management. Typical job titles include civil engineer, structural engineer, geotechnical engineer, transport/traffic engineer, water resources engineer, site or project engineer, and construction/project manager. Graduates also work in consultancy, local and state government agencies, utilities, and large construction and engineering firms.
The honours degree provides the academic foundation required for professional recognition with Engineers Australia and for progression to chartered status following relevant work experience. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study (specialist masters or research degrees) to develop expertise in areas such as structural engineering, geotechnics, transport modelling, environmental engineering or construction management.
