What you'll study

The Flexible Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is structured around a common first-year engineering core that builds mathematics, programming and engineering fundamentals, followed by discipline-specific and elective study in later years. Typical first-year subjects include engineering mathematics, introductory programming and computing, materials and mechanics, circuits and systems, and engineering design and communication.

From the second year you choose a discipline pathway (for example civil, mechanical, electrical/electronic, software/systems, telecommunications or biomedical) while retaining the option to take units from other faculties. Second- and third-year topics commonly cover fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, solid mechanics, structural analysis, control systems, signals and systems, embedded systems, software engineering, materials science, and design for manufacture. Project-based learning is emphasised, with laboratory work, group design projects and industry problem briefs.

The fourth year is honours level, combining advanced technical coursework with a substantial research or design thesis/capstone project supervised by academic staff. The flexible structure allows students to take elective streams or minors in areas such as data analytics, entrepreneurship, sustainability, business management or biomedical engineering, enabling multidisciplinary career preparation.

Entry requirements

Admission is normally based on a high school qualification equivalent to the Australian Year 12 and meeting UTS prerequisites for mathematics and related sciences. Applicants are generally expected to have studied advanced mathematics (or equivalent) and it is recommended to have physics. Entry is competitive and selection considers academic performance and the relevance of prior study.

For domestic applicants who do not apply through the standard school-leaver pathway, UTS recognises alternative entry routes including recognised prior learning, vocational qualifications, and articulations from TAFE. International applicants must hold an equivalent secondary qualification and meet UTS English language requirements. Some non-traditional applicants may be assessed through portfolio, interview or bridging studies where appropriate.
