What you'll study

The program builds a foundation in core legal disciplines and develops practical skills in legal research, advocacy and transaction work. Core subjects typically include foundations of law, contract law, torts, criminal law, property law, constitutional law, administrative law, civil procedure and evidence. Students also study commercial subjects such as corporations and commercial law, tax, and insolvency, as well as elective or specialised topics like family law, international law, human rights, Indigenous legal studies, and environmental law.

Practical and skills-based learning is embedded across the degree through units in legal research and writing, negotiation and dispute resolution, advocacy and trial skills, and transactional lawyering. Students can gain experiential learning via legal clinics, pro bono projects, clinical placements and mooting competitions. There is scope to tailor study through electives and through combined or double-degree options with disciplines such as business, arts, communications, or science.

Entry requirements

Domestic applicants are usually admitted on the basis of successful completion of secondary schooling or recognised equivalent qualifications; selection is competitive and often based on a tertiary selection rank or alternative admission pathways. UTS offers pathways for mature-age applicants and for those with vocational or higher education backgrounds. Applicants should meet prescribed English language competency requirements.

International applicants must present recognised secondary or tertiary qualifications equivalent to Australian admission standards and demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test or recognised exemptions. Additional documentation such as certified transcripts and, where relevant, statements of purpose or evidence of prior study may be required. Admission to certain combined degrees or advanced standing arrangements may depend on previous tertiary study and subject prerequisites.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for a range of legal and related careers. Many proceed to admission as solicitors or barristers after completing required practical legal training or a postgraduate practical legal training program. Common roles for graduates include:

• Solicitor in private practice (commercial, litigation, family, criminal or specialised practice areas)
• Barrister (following admission and completion of the applicable bar requirements)
• In-house legal counsel and compliance officer roles within corporations and not-for-profits
• Government lawyer, policy advisor or regulatory officer at local, state or federal level
• Careers in dispute resolution, mediation, legal publishing, and legal education
• Roles in advocacy and community services, including work with legal aid organisations and community legal centres

Graduates without immediate admission to practice also find opportunities in business, public administration, NGOs and international organisations where legal training, analytical reasoning and communication skills are valued.
