What you'll study

This combined program integrates core legal subjects with a comprehensive economics curriculum. You will complete foundational law units such as contract, torts, criminal law, property, constitutional and administrative law, evidence, and corporations law, together with professional practice, legal research and writing, and clinical or practical law experiences. The economics component covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative and econometric methods, economic policy, public economics, international trade, industrial organisation and electives that allow specialisation in areas such as finance, behavioural economics or development economics.

The degree is structured so you progressively build professional legal skills (advocacy, negotiation, drafting and client interviewing) while developing quantitative and theoretical economic competence. Learning methods include lectures and tutorials, case-method learning, moot courts and simulated client clinics, econometrics labs and industry-linked projects. There are opportunities for cross-disciplinary capstones, internships and research-led electives.

Entry requirements

Admission is competitive and based on academic merit. Domestic applicants typically require a strong secondary school completion score or an equivalent qualification; mature-age applicants and those with tertiary study or work experience may be considered through alternative entry pathways. Applicants are expected to demonstrate competence in mathematics for the economics component and in English for academic study.

International applicants must meet UTS English language requirements and present comparable secondary or tertiary qualifications. Additional admissions pathways include recognised pathway programs, articulation from relevant diplomas, and consideration of professional experience. Other prospects include roles in public policy, competition and consumer protection bodies, central banks, international organisations, and advisory or strategy functions within industry. The degree also provides a solid foundation for further study such as a Master of Laws, specialist economics postgraduate programs or professional legal accreditation where required.
