What you'll study

This programme combines advanced research methods with practice-based design enquiry. Core themes include design research methodologies (qualitative, ethnographic and participatory methods), practice-led and practice-based research, critical design theory, speculative and futures methods, and methods for translating research into designed outcomes.

Typical study components include taught research-methods subjects, seminars on design theory and critique, studio-based practice units and an independent major research project or thesis. Students learn to formulate research questions, design and run research with users and stakeholders, analyse qualitative and visual data, prototype and evaluate design interventions, and communicate research outcomes through written, visual and exhibition formats.

• Speculative design, futures and scenario development
• Prototyping and evaluation for research impact
• Independent major research project or thesis supervised by academic staff

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a bachelor degree (or equivalent) in design, architecture, fine arts, engineering, information design, human–computer interaction, the social sciences or a closely related discipline. Applicants with a bachelor degree in another field plus substantial professional experience in design or research may also be considered.

All applicants must submit a portfolio that demonstrates design capability and research interest, and a statement outlining research aims or a project proposal. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview. Applicants must meet the University of Technology Sydney English-language requirements for postgraduate coursework study.
