What you'll study

The programme combines core planning theory with applied studio work and technical skills training. You will study subjects covering strategic and statutory planning, planning law and policy, urban design principles, environmental and heritage planning, and transport and infrastructure planning. Applied modules on planning methods include GIS and spatial analysis, research methods, project appraisal and economics for planning.

Delivery typically blends lectures, seminars, design studios and industry-linked projects. Students undertake a major professional project or research thesis that synthesises practice-based knowledge; there are also opportunities for internships or practicum placements with government agencies, councils or consultancies. Electives allow specialisation in areas such as housing and social planning, climate adaptation and resilience, community engagement, development assessment, and urban regeneration.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a recognised bachelor degree in planning, architecture, urban design, engineering, environmental science, or another relevant discipline. Candidates without a directly related undergraduate degree but with strong professional experience in related fields may be considered. Entry normally requires a competitive academic record; some applicants may be asked to provide a portfolio or evidence of professional experience.

All applicants whose prior tertiary instruction was not in English must demonstrate proficiency in English. International applicants should check the university's accepted English tests and minimum scores. Additional requirements may apply for advanced standing or credit transfer if you have prior postgraduate study or professional qualifications.
