What you'll study

The programme combines core training in policy analysis, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and specialised modules that address policy design, implementation and evaluation. Teaching blends lectures, seminars, case studies and applied projects, with opportunities to undertake a research dissertation or an applied policy project.

• Core topics: public policy analysis; policy evaluation and impact assessment; research methods for public policy (quantitative and qualitative); economics for public policy.
• Typical subject modules: policy processes and institutions, comparative public policy, cost–benefit analysis, governance and regulatory policy, evidence-based policy-making, ethics and public administration.
• Skills and methods: statistical analysis, causal inference, programme evaluation, stakeholder analysis, policy modelling and qualitative interviewing.
• Independent work: a supervised dissertation or an applied policy project that allows you to pursue a focused empirical or practice-led investigation on a policy problem.
• Optional learning experiences: workshops with practitioners, policy labs or consultancy-style group projects where available, and opportunities to engage with local and national policy actors.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours) in a relevant discipline such as politics, public policy, economics, sociology, law or another social science. Strong quantitative ability is advantageous for some modules; applicants without formal quantitative training may be asked to demonstrate preparatory coursework or relevant professional experience.

Relevant professional experience in the public, voluntary or private sectors can strengthen an application. All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English at a level that meets the university's postgraduate requirements.

Common roles include policy analyst, civil servant or public affairs officer, researcher at think tanks and NGOs, consultant in public policy or public sector consultancy, analyst roles in international organisations, and positions in local government or political advisory teams.
