The BSc Physics & Philosophy (Year Abroad) at the University of York is an interdisciplinary degree combining rigorous training in theoretical and experimental physics with philosophical analysis of science, logic and epistemology. This joint honours degree balances core physics and mathematics with philosophical topics focused on the foundations and interpretation of science. In the early years you build a firm base in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, waves, thermodynamics and introductory quantum mechanics alongside the mathematics needed for physics (calculus, linear algebra, differential equations and computational methods). Practical laboratory classes develop experimental technique, data analysis and scientific reporting.
Philosophy modules introduce logic, critical reasoning, epistemology, metaphysics and the history and philosophy of science, including topics such as the nature of explanation, scientific inference, and the interpretation of quantum theory. As you progress you choose advanced physics options (for example condensed matter, particle physics, astrophysics, statistical mechanics, and advanced quantum mechanics) and advanced philosophy options (for example philosophy of physics, philosophy of mind, formal logic, ethics of technology and philosophy of language).
The programme includes an integrated year abroad at an approved partner university, typically taken after the second year. That year gives you the opportunity to take physics and/or philosophy courses in a different academic culture and can include research placements or specialised modules not available at York. In the final year you return to York to complete advanced modules and undertake a substantial honours project or dissertation, which may be experimental, theoretical or a philosophical thesis on the foundations and implications of contemporary physics.
Applicants are expected to have strong qualifications in Mathematics and Physics (or equivalent). Typical offers specify high-level achievement in both subjects at A level, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, or an equivalent international qualification. The International Baccalaureate applicants normally present higher level Mathematics and Physics. Successful candidates also demonstrate numeracy, problem-solving ability and clear written communication.
York welcomes applicants with a range of qualifications, including BTEC, access courses and international credentials; contextual offers and admissions routes for mature students are available. If English is not your first language, you'll need to meet the University’s English language requirement. Selection is based on academic record, predicted performance, and the personal statement; interviews may be used in some circumstances.
