What you'll study

The MMath Mathematics & Computer Science is a four-year integrated master's that builds from core mathematical foundations and introductory programming in Year 1 to specialist and research-led topics in later years. You will study a balanced programme of pure and applied mathematics together with computer science modules, with increasing choice and opportunity to pursue individual interests.

  • Year 1: calculus and linear algebra, introduction to proofs and mathematical reasoning, probability and statistics foundations, and introductory programming and computational thinking. Emphasis is on building rigorous problem-solving skills and basic software development.
  • Year 2: core mathematics (real analysis, algebra, differential equations) and core computer science (data structures, algorithms, discrete mathematics, object-orientated programming). Optional modules typically introduce numerical methods, mathematical modelling and databases.
  • Year 3: advanced topics in both subjects such as complex analysis, topology, optimisation, computational mathematics, machine learning, cryptography, and theoretical computer science (complexity and computability). Students choose from a range of optional modules to tailor their pathway.
  • Year 4 (integrated master's year): substantial individual project or dissertation that may be computational, theoretical or applied, plus specialist advanced modules. Project work develops research skills, independent study and presentation. Optional placements or internship opportunities may be organised through departmental and university employer links.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have strong mathematical ability demonstrated through qualifications such as A levels, the International Baccalaureate or equivalent. Typical offers are competitive and will normally include a high grade in Mathematics; Further Mathematics is strongly recommended for applicants who have taken it. Applicants with alternative qualifications (e.g. Level 3 vocational qualifications) or mature applicants are considered on an individual basis. The department values evidence of programming experience and mathematical problem-solving where available.
