What you'll study

This three-year degree combines core biomedical science subjects with practical laboratory training and an independent research project. Early modules build a foundation in cell biology, biochemistry, human physiology and molecular biology, while intermediate modules introduce microbiology, immunology, haematology and clinical chemistry. Practical classes teach core laboratory techniques such as microscopy, spectrophotometry, PCR, gel electrophoresis, aseptic technique and diagnostic assays. In the final year you complete an extended laboratory-based research project and choose from optional modules that may include advanced molecular diagnostics, clinical microbiology, forensic applications, or public health and epidemiology.

The programme is taught through lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals and project supervision. Assessment typically combines coursework, practical assessments, written exams and a dissertation or project report. The course emphasises good laboratory practice, data analysis, scientific communication and professional ethics.

Entry requirements

Typical entry requires successful completion of secondary-level qualifications with good grades in two or three relevant subjects. Biology or human biology is normally required, and chemistry is strongly preferred; alternatives such as applied science or equivalent qualifications are considered. Applicants with BTEC or other vocational science qualifications are welcome provided they include substantial content in biology/chemistry. You will also need GCSE-level competence in mathematics and English.

International applicants should hold an equivalent qualification and demonstrate English language proficiency to the University’s required standard. Mature applicants with relevant work or laboratory experience are considered on a case-by-case basis. Selection normally takes into account predicted/achieved grades, personal statement and references.
