What you'll study

This programme combines the department's core philosophy curriculum with structured Spanish language and area studies. The course is typically taken over four years to accommodate a full year abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.

Philosophy modules

• Introductory modules in logic, critical thinking and argumentation to build analytical technique.
• Foundation courses in epistemology, metaphysics and ethics providing grounding in central debates.
• Historical courses covering early modern philosophy and 19th–20th century currents.
• Options in contemporary philosophy including philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, political philosophy and philosophy of science.
• Assessment typically by essays, unseen exams, seminar presentations and a final-year dissertation or extended research project.

Spanish and Hispanic studies modules

• Progressive language tuition from intermediate to advanced levels, with focus on speaking, writing and translation skills.
• Literature and film modules exploring peninsular and Latin American traditions, from Golden Age drama to contemporary novels and cinema.
• Cultural and historical modules on Spanish-speaking societies, politics and identity.
• Applied language options such as translation practice, interpreting or language for professional purposes.
• Assessment includes oral examinations, coursework portfolios, translations and written exams.

Year abroad

The year abroad is an integral part of the programme. Students spend their third year (or an agreed year) studying at a partner university or undertaking approved work placements in a Spanish-speaking country. The year is designed to consolidate language fluency and give first‑hand experience of Hispanic cultures; credit from study or work is transferred back to York under the programme rules.

Entry requirements

Admission is competitive and applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance at secondary level and a clear interest in both philosophy and Spanish. Typical applicants will have qualifications in relevant subjects and evidence of language ability. For applicants whose first language is not Spanish, prior study of Spanish (GCSE/A-level or equivalent) or demonstrable equivalent competence is normally expected, and international applicants will be asked to provide recognised evidence of language proficiency where required.

Selection also considers personal statement, reference(s) and, where requested, interview or written work in philosophy. Mature applicants and those without formal language qualifications may be considered, but should contact the department to discuss language preparation options.
