What you'll study

This three-year programme builds from fundamental concepts to advanced topics across organismal, cellular and molecular biology. In the first year you follow a common core that typically covers cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, physiology and the principles of biochemistry and molecular biology, together with practical laboratory and data-analysis skills. In the second year you broaden and deepen your knowledge through specialist modules such as microbiology, developmental biology, plant biology, neurobiology, conservation biology, and bioinformatics, and you gain increased experience of experimental design and statistical analysis.

The final year places strong emphasis on independent research: you undertake a substantial research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff, alongside advanced option modules that may include molecular techniques, genomics, systems biology, ecological field methods and professional skills for biosciences. Practical work, data interpretation and transferable skills (communication, numeracy, IT) are integrated throughout the programme.
