What you'll study

This programme combines foundational accounting and finance modules with applied quantitative and management subjects. Typical first-year modules cover financial accounting, principles of finance, business law, economics and introductory quantitative methods to build a broad foundation.

In later years you will study intermediate and advanced topics such as corporate finance, investment analysis, portfolio management, financial markets, management accounting, taxation, auditing and financial reporting. Optional modules commonly include financial modelling, derivatives and risk management, forensic accounting, entrepreneurship and international finance.

The course emphasises practical skills: numerical and analytical techniques, interpreting financial statements, spreadsheet modelling and use of financial databases. There are opportunities for a placement year or study abroad (depending on the route you choose), plus project work and a final-year dissertation or applied research project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have a recognised secondary school leaving qualification or equivalent. Typical applicants will present A levels (or equivalent) including a quantitative subject such as Mathematics, or acceptable international equivalents.

English language proficiency is required for international applicants. GCSE (or equivalent) passes in English and Mathematics are usually expected where applicable. The university also considers access courses, BTEC qualifications and other recognised pathways; mature applicants with relevant work experience are welcome to apply.

Career prospects

Graduates move into a wide range of roles in finance and accounting, including financial analyst, management accountant, auditor, tax advisor, corporate finance assistant, investment analyst, treasury or banking operations, and business analyst positions. Many graduates progress to professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW or the CFA, using degree exemptions where applicable.

The programme emphasises employability skills: commercial awareness, quantitative analysis, report writing and presentation. Students benefit from careers support, employer engagement events and opportunities to undertake placements that can lead directly to graduate jobs.
