See the degree grade →The Graduate Diploma of Teaching at the University of Otago is a one-year, professionally focused qualification that prepares degree-holders for classroom teaching with endorsement in either Primary or Secondary education. It suits graduates who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want a pathway to teacher registration and initial classroom practice in New Zealand schools.
This programme combines professional studies in pedagogy, curriculum and assessment with substantial school-based professional experience. Core topics include classroom management, inclusive practice and planning for diverse learners, assessment for learning, classroom behaviour and wellbeing, and how to design and deliver learning across the New Zealand Curriculum. You will also study culturally responsive practice with a particular emphasis on te ao Māori perspectives and Pasifika education approaches.
For the Primary endorsement you will study teaching and learning across the primary curriculum (literacy, numeracy, social sciences, science, the arts and technology), early years pedagogy where relevant, and integrated curriculum planning for 5–13 year olds. For the Secondary endorsement you will focus on subject-specific pedagogy and methods for adolescent learners; you will normally take modules that develop teaching approaches in your chosen subject areas and learn how to adapt curriculum, assessment and classroom practice for secondary school contexts.
All students undertake sequenced professional experience placements in partner schools throughout the programme. These placements increase in responsibility and length and provide supervised, assessed classroom teaching across different year levels and contexts. Research-informed practice, classroom inquiry and reflective professional growth are threaded through coursework and practicum requirements.
Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification. For the Secondary endorsement, applicants are normally expected to have undergraduate study in the subject(s) they intend to teach—this typically means a major or substantial component of study in each nominated subject. The programme also requires applicants to meet professional standards for initial teacher education, which include demonstration of literacy and numeracy competence and fitness to teach.
Successful applicants will be required to complete background checks and any health or fitness declarations necessary for school placements, and to satisfy any statutory requirements for teacher registration with the relevant teaching authority in New Zealand. Selection may consider prior academic performance, relevant experience with young people, and personal suitability for teaching.
