What you'll study

The MArch combines intensive design studios with taught modules in technical, historical and professional subjects. The programme typically spans major design projects that increase in scale and complexity, supported by classes in building technology, environmental design, structures, digital design and representation, and architectural history and theory.

• Design Studio: iterative projects that develop conceptual thinking, contextual analysis, design development and detailed resolution.
• Professional Practice & Law: project procurement, contracts, ethics and the business of running architectural work.
• Building Technology & Structures: construction methods, materials, detailing and structural principles applied to architectural projects.
• Sustainable and Environmental Design: passive design, energy performance, low-carbon strategies and assessment methods.
• Digital Design and BIM: computational design, parametric modelling, digital fabrication and information management.
• History, Theory and Research Methods: critical frameworks, cultural context and techniques for independent research leading to a major dissertation or design-led thesis.

The programme is studio-centred and project-based, with regular juries, site visits and collaboration with industry. A substantial final project allows you to demonstrate mastery of design, technical integration and research.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally hold a recognised undergraduate degree in architecture (equivalent to a UK RIBA/ARB Part 1 qualification) or a closely related discipline. Typical academic entry is an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or equivalent; candidates with a lower second-class degree plus strong professional experience or a compelling portfolio may also be considered.

Applications require a detailed portfolio of design work, an academic transcript, a personal statement outlining aims in architecture, and references. Shortlisted applicants are often invited to an interview (in person or online).

International applicants should hold an equivalent academic qualification and demonstrate English language proficiency. Specific English requirements and alternative evidence of ability are provided by the university's admissions guidance.
